The Killers eager return to Oxegen..and the fans are excited too

Dave Keuning of The Killers reveals that Oxegen ranks higher than Glasto in their eyes

Dave Keuning was so excited about The Killers' return to Oxegen this year that it made Hot Press' Stuart Clark wonder if he had an Irish cailín waiting for him in the flatlands of Kildare.

"I haven't got an Irish girlfriend...more's the pity! Oxegen's a big deal because it's one of the first European festivals we lpayed when we came over from Vegas in 2004," he says.

"We only had one hit - 'Mr. Brightside'- and were worried in case no one showed. But the tent was packed with people screaming out the words to songs we didn't think they knew. It was that night we thought, 'Hey, something's happening here!' Oxegen more so than Glastonbury even was the highlight of our summer."

Keuning goes on to talk about the songs he wishes Brandon Flowers would sing and performing with Bono, Coldplay and Take That.

But you can read all about that in the current issue of Hot Press which is in shops now.

The Killers are playing the Oxegen Main Stage on Sunday July 12.

Sam's Town

Sam’s Town suggests that the newly face-fuzzed Brandon Flowers has contracted a serious dose of Bruce-llosis (a quick scan of the album’s titles yields a number of Boss buzzwords: “river”, “town”, “Jonny”, “wild”). No bad thing necessarily, but any rock band without the E-Streeters’ skill or Springsteen’s Steinbeckian grasp of American history should beware of straying across the wrong side of the New Jersey tracks and ending up in Bon Jovi-ville.

When You Were Young

Given that The Killers’ opening string of near classic singles, ‘When You Were Young’ is a bit of a shock at first, being apparently devoid of any kind of hook. Give it a few listens however, and its subtle charms start to reveal themselves. They haven’t messed with the format too much, but there is a noticeable toughening up of the sound and an almost Springsteen-esque epic rock feel. Not the best record of the fortnight, but certainly the biggest and potentially most intriguing.
