TERRY CALLIER
Red Box, Dublin
The resurgence of Chicago soul legend Terry Callier is one of the great happy ending stories in recent years. Rescued from near obscurity on the back of the Acid Jazz scene a few years back he has since made up for lost time with an intensive bout of touring and recording.
An extraordinary performer in any language, Callier has successfully managed to transcend his original roots as a songwriter (for acts like The Dells and Jerry Butler). In his solo incarnation he encompasses a myriad of influences, including gospel, jazz, folk blues and afro-rhythms.

Highlights of this nearly two hour long tour-de-force included favourites such as 'African Violet' and 'What Colour Is Love' to his take on Curtis Mayfield's 'People Get Ready'. 'Lament For The Late AD' his poignant tribute to Amadou Diallo, the unarmed man shot by New York Police officers (also the inspiration for Springsteen's ‘American Skin’) was chilling in its effect, underlining Callier's strong political stance.
At times reminiscent of John Martyn, his vocal delivery ranges from quiet restraint to passionate intensity, while his single-minded focus on the integrity of his performance rarely wavers.
Like I say, stunning.
