Singer continues shattering records with over one million sales in the first week of the release of her new album Speak Now
Well look who's all grown up. Taylor Swift's newest album Speak Now, released in the States October 25, has sold 1,046,718 copies within its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The staggering number is the highest single-week total since 2005, and Swift became only the 16th person, and fourth woman, to hit one million sales in one week since SoundScan began tracking these things in 1991.
To put that number into even more perspective, the album totaled 18% of all record sales for the week, setting an all-time record for percentage of sales in one week, and broke her own record set by 2008's Fearless for the highest number of digital album sales for a country album with 278,000. Speak Now is also the biggest debuting country album of all time and was the largest single-week release in the history of mega store Target.
The manner of the record sales seemingly continues the trend of declining CD and rising digital purchases, with just 73% of the sales coming in CD form. According to SoundScan, CDs represented 90% of album sales in 2007, but by 2009 had dipped down to 79%.
Swift will embark on a whirlwind 85 date, 18 country tour in early 2011. She's slated to appear at The O2 in Dublin March 27.
