Already broadcasting the Rugby World Cup in September, TV3 may battle it out with RTE for Olympic Games rights.
With Eurosport striking a deal to broadcast the Olympic Games from 2018-2024, 200 hours of action still has to be given to home broadcasters which means TV3 may attempt to outbid RTE for Olympics coverage. Head of Sport Kieran Holden stated that the new deal "could open up opportunities for us with the sub-licensing of events, something that we have not had the chance to do before because of the way the rights were sold by the EBU."We are interested in all sports rights if they are of interest to an Irish audience and are commercially viable"
Having lost their GAA coverage to Sky Sports, this new deal could be the perfect opportunity for the broadcaster to challenge the RTE Sports department once again.
