NWOBHM also-rans deliver another damp squib
Encouraged by the positive reaction they received when they recently re-released their early material from the ‘80s, New Wave Of British Heavy Metal act Stampede decided (as one does) to get the band back together for another crack of the whip: A Sudden Impulse is their first new material in a whopping 28 years. From this rather jaundiced perspective, they shouldn’t have bothered with the reunion, as nothing on the album offers anything even remotely new. ‘Hard Rock Hell’ sounds tired and old, album opener ‘Send Me Down An Angel’ is a predictable straightforward head-banger and ‘Jessie’ sounds so much like ‘Lil’ Devil’ by The Cult, we wouldn’t be surprised if Ian Astbury gets his solicitor involved if he ever hears it. Sometimes sudden impulses should be resisted.
