Snow Patrol (complete with the *as revealed in the latest issue of Hot Press* new bassist Paul Wilson 2nd from right) are the latest act to join Oxfam's Make Trade Fair Campaign.
Coinciding with "the global week of action for trade justice" their very own Gary Lightbody got rice - the staple food of half the world's population - dumped on him! Why dumped? Well, not only is rice a means of nourishment, but 2 billion people (many small farmers) grow it for a living. However, this living is being squeezed by by developing countries being forced to accept imports of cheap, often dumped (which means sold below cost), food.
Taking time out from their recording in Dingle to add their weight to the campaign - which has already seen the likes of Thom Yorke, Michael Stipe and Bono be similarly festooned with everything from Milk, Coffee and Feathers - was no problem to the band. "There is such gross global trade injustice which is keeping people in some of the poorest countries being caught in the poverty cycle. It is nothing for me to get dumped on with rice if it gets the message out that to make poverty history one of the things we need to do is make trade fair" commented Lightbody.
