Following the paens of praise which greeted it at this year's Sundance festival, John Carney's Sing Street has just been snapped up by SXSW.
The SXSW festival in Austin, Texas has announced that it will screen John Carney's latest movie hit in its Festival Favourites category. The film, which is set in recessionary 1980s Dublin, is scheduled for release in mid-March in Ireland. Jack Reynor, Aidan Gillen and Maria Doyle Kennedy are among the stars.
It isn't the only Irish gem to have found a place in this year's SXSW programme. Sing Street will be joined by four Irish short films. SXSW 2016 runs from March 11th-March 20th.
The shorts are:
1. How Was Your Day?
Penned by Dublin author Damien O'Donnell, 'How Was Your Day' follows a young woman who is waiting to give birth to her first child. The short film stars Eileen Walsh, Seán Duggan and Aidan McArdle. It has already accumulated significant success as it won this year's Best Short at the Foyle Film Festival and has qualified for 2017 Oscar Consideration.
2. Ernestine & Kit
Simon Bird (more commonly known as Will from Channel 4's The Inbetweeners) directs Ernestine & Kit, a story about two elderly women driving through Co.Sligo in their neat Japanese car. Their conversation turns to the immoral and terrible lives people must be living these days. Described as a "dark fairytale", Ernestine & Kit is an adaptation of Kevin Barry's City of Bohane.
3. Geist
Written and directed by Alex Sherwood, Ben Harper and Sean Mullen, Geist is another entry that showcases the talent in Irish animation. Geist is a dark tale of a shipwrecked fisherman who finds shelter in an abandoned house on a remote island, only to discover that he is not alone.

The 5 minute short is produced and directed by Conor Whelan and features music from Basenji Abaac and Fab Martini.
