The singer immediately calls on Sinn Féin leaders to "make 'the supreme sacrifice'" and step down.
In a Facebook post last night, Sinéad O'Connor revealed that she has joined Sinn Féin. Arguing that there would be "a zillion per cent increase in membership" of the party if leadership was handed over to those under 30 who are not associated with "frightful things", she also called on the current "elders" of Sinn Féin to resign.
"I might not even be the kind of person they want," O'Connor writes, "Because I'm gonna write here that I feel the elders of Sinn Féin are going to have to make 'the supreme sacrifice' and step down shortly in the same way the last Pope did."
The news follows an earlier blog post from the 'Take Me To Church' star, entitled 'Strange Week', in which she outlined her intentions to become more political. O'Connor wrote that she wants a "proper socialist Ireland" and has now decided that voting is "an important thing" after years of apathy for the process.
"We can’t solve the water issue or any other issue if we don’t solve the first issue," she continued, "Which is the ownership of the entire of Ireland is the right of all the people of all of Ireland, in civil and religious freedom."
In reaction to the news, former Sinn Féin publicity director Danny Morrison tweeted:
I've joined Sinead O'Connor - http://t.co/fYh5Qv2JF7 - and I want her to stop singing
