Both brothers co-owned a property company Shafin Developements together before it went into receivership in 2012. While Shane Filan subsequently went bankrupt and launched a solo career, his brother Finbarr has vowed to run in the next General Election in the Sligo/Leitrim Constituency.

Due to run with the Lucinda Creighton's Renua party, Finbarr believes he would be suited to politics stating that "I believe I have the character, personality, ability and life experience to win a seat".
