Currently gracing the cover of Hot Press, Carlow teen Saoirse Ronan has been nominated for an Oscar for her turn in Atonement.
The 13-year-old has received a Best Supporting Actress nomination for her recent role in Atonement.
The Irish teen, who is interviewed in the current issue of Hot Press, is up against stiff competition for the prize, with established actresses Cate Blanchett (for I'm Not There) and Tilda Swinton (Michael Clayton) also nominated, along with more recent new-comers Amy Ryan (Gone Baby Gone) and Ruby Dee (American Gangster).
And Saoirse is among a host of Irish talent who are up for Academy Awards this year; with Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová in the running for Best Original Song with 'Falling Slowly' from Once; Daniel Day-Lewis up for Best Actor in There Will Be Blood and Armagh man Séamus McGarvey nominated for Best Cinematography for his work on Atonement.
Irish director Kirsten Sheridan also has cause for celebration today as a track from her latest film August Rush, starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers, has also been nominated.
But of course we'll have to wait to find out if Saoirse and Co. are successful – the Academy Awards take place on February 24.
