The acclaimed documentary will be screened at the Strand Arts Centre next week...
What's Going On: Taste Live at the Isle Of Wight, the documentary/concert film following Rory Gallagher and co. as they play alongside The Who, The Doors and Jimi Hendrix at the legendary festival, is to be screened in Belfast next week.
The Strand Arts Centre is the spot for what will be the third showing of the film on Irish soil. It first ran as part of the Cork Film Festival at the Cork Opera House, while it was also shown in Dublin last week at the IFI - both screenings, unsurprisingly, drew packed houses.
Indeed, Hot Press' own 'Spirit Who Walks' was able to ghost into the Cork showing. "There was a huge turnout in Cork Opera House for the screening, as part of the Cork Film Festival, of What’s Goin On: Taste Live At The Isle of Wight," The Phantom reports in the current issue of Hot Press. "A packed house cheered to the rafters after every track: it was almost as if the man himself, Rory Gallagher, were in the room.
"And what a brilliant performance it was too. At the height of their powers Taste were a magnificent band, with the great Cork guitar hero setting the standard with what was utterly brilliant and remarkably compelling fretwork. A huge crowd stayed for the Q&A afterwards, conducted by Hot Press’ editor Niall Stokes with Donal Gallagher, who worked on the Isle of Wight gig with Rory and the band – and later took over as Rory’s manager and mentor.
"Among the guests at a special reception, held in advance of the screening, was Norman Damery, the original drummer with Taste; he still lives in Cork. The Phantom also chatted with Eibhlin Gleeson, recently appointed CEO of Cork Opera House, James Mullighan, programme Director of Cork Film Festival, photographer Bibi Lehmann, who flew in specially for the screening from Brussels, Donal’s son Eoin Gallagher and audio engineer Johnny Campbell – also a former drummer with Taste!”
Now it is Belfast’s turn, with the showing taking place on December 3. It should be another special night...
