Pugwash are justifiably chuffed this week after hearing that one of the songs from their Almanac album, ‘Anyone Who Asks’, has made it on to the soundtrack of the new Ed Norton, Colin Farrell and Jon Voight movie, Pride & Glory.
“Paul Buchanan from the Blue Nile’s soundman, Robin Danar, gave a copy of our Australian compilation, Earworm, to the film’s music supervisor, Nic Harcourt of KCRW Radio in Los Angeles,” explains Pugwash singer Thomas Walsh. “He thought it’d be perfect for one of the main scenes, and they’ve ended up using 1min 45secs of it, which is just fantastic.”
Confirmation of their big screen breakthrough came when, “I came home one night and found a fax waiting for me from New Line Cinema, the company who’ve done Lords Of The Rings, Rush Hour and loads of other big movies. It was very Hollywood and full of legalese, but very definite about wanting to use the song. Gavin O’Connor of Tumbleweeds fame is the writer and director, and it’s about members of a New York cop family who may or may not have become corrupt.”
The timing couldn’t be better with Pugwash currently readying a new album in Dublin for late August/early September release on 1969 Records.
“The sessions are going great,” Walsh enthuses. “I’ve done some co-writes with Andy Partridge of XTC fame, which Neil Hannon has very kindly played on, and Michael Penn’s guesting as well. We’re accused of being retro all the time, so we’re calling it Eleven Modern Antiquities to say that we’re proud of our influences.”
