Pierce Turner is set to make a rare Dublin appearance at the beginning of September.
However the gig, which takes place at the Village on Saturday September 1st, will be one with a difference.
"I'll be doing a night of Stevie Wonder songs," the Wexford songwriting legend told hotpress.com. "You gotta sing to keep your voice in shape and I got fed up with singing my own songs at home all the time – and so I started to sing Stevie Wonder songs. It grew out of that."
On what promises to be an intriguing and hugely rewarding occasion, Turner will be accompanied by a brilliant backing band, with Wayne Sheehy on drums, Garvan Gallagher on bass and Conor Brady on guitar – so fireworks are guaranteed.
"I've got this 17 year old female sax player from Wexford by the name of Rachel Clancy as well, and she's amazing," Turner enthused. "They're brilliant songs and they really sound great, so I think it'll be a bit special. It's a one-off. I'm heading back to New York shortly afterwards to record an album, so I won't be doing any more shows here till next year."
With nine Stevie Wonder songs confirmed for the set-list, Turner has promised that they'll be anything but slavish cover versions. Pierce will also be including some of his own material on the night – ensuring that the gig will offer both a celebration of the music of one of the bona fide geniuses of contemporary black music and an insight into the inspirational character of one of Ireland's greatest songwriters and performers.
