The tributes have been flooding in to Philip Chevron from fans and musicianly admirers alike. The legendary Radiators From Space and Pogues man passed away this morning after a long battle with cancer.
“Sad to hear the news of Philip Chevron's untimely passing,” says Reekus Records’ Elvera Butler. “The Radiators from Space were the first New Wave band to play for me in Cork in 1977, and Phil was the one who looked after the bookings. Some years later we met again when I promoted an early Pogues gig at my London venue, The Ritzy in Brixton. More recently we had a great chat when he shared memories of gigs in Ireland while I was doing research for our Spit! book. The recent Testimonial gig at the Olympia was a fitting send-off for a lovely guy and a great talent. May he Rest in Peace.”
Those sentiments are echoed by Hothouse Flower Fiachna O Braonain who was in the thick of the Olympia action.
“I’m sad to hear that Philip Chevron has passed away,” he proffers. “It was such an honour to see him and sing at his Testimonial concert a few weeks ago. My condolences to his friends and family.”
He ends by quoting the "Faithful departed, there's no broken hearted? And no more tristesse in your world without end” couplet of Phil’s that is extra poignant tonight.
Elsewhere, Paul McCloone from The Undertones says, “Sincere condolences to the family and many friends of Philip Chevron. A fine musician and a great songwriter. RIP”; “So sad to hear of the passing of Philip Chevron. It was such a thrill for me when the Rads did a session on Mystery Train back in the day,” adds RTÉ man John Kelly; “Very sad to hear of the passing of the great Phil Chevron today” rues Thin Lizzy and Black Star Riders man Ricky Watwick; “So sad that Philip Chevron has left us. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal” are the thoughts of publicist and promoter Buzz O’Neill and “God bless Philip Chevron. A truly lovely man. RIP Philip x” ventures B.P. Fallon.
