November will see an academic celebration of the Manchester band
Following successful weekends on Bowie, Morrissey and Riot Grrrl amongst others, the University of Limerick will host a symposium focused on Joy Division later this year.
We already brought you news that Peter Hook & The Light would be making their way to Limerick, and now it's been confirmed that November 25 and 26 will see fans and scholars gather for a celebration of the work of Curtis, Hook and co. The organisers - the University's Popular Music and Popular Culture research cluster - have issued an open call for papers.
Topics they recommend considering include Joy Division and the creation of a distinct Manchester Soundscape, the iconography of the group, and fandom and the ‘cult’ of Ian Curtis; just about anything covering the cultural and musical legacy of the group.
Hopefuls should submit a Word document containing the paper title, a 250 word abstract, and author information including full name, institutional affiliation, email address, and a 50-word bio to [email protected] by 31st July 2015.
