The death of Nobel prize-winning poet Seamus Heaney in August has been followed by tributes from the hundreds of musicians, artists and writers across the world inspired by his poetical prowess.
But one of the most notable tributes comes from Paul Simon, who describes Heaney’s poetry as rare, masterful and full of music.
The tribute, which was posted on the New York Times website, recalls Simon’s numerous meetings with Heaney at his home near Dublin, and later at the musician’s place in Manhattan. He also remembers sitting stunned in the audience as the poet read his work on stage. "Seamus gave a mesmerizing, witty and emotional performance" writes Simon, who goes on to describe Heaney’s personal charm and rare talent; "there are few poets I would rank as his equal."
