Psychonavigation’s ninth birthday party was a good few audience members short of full, but that’s not to say the music wasn't top notch.
Newcomers Tiny Magnetic Pets have only played a handful of gigs to date, but they certainly know what they’re doing. ‘Girl In A White Dress’ is fantastic, as is a cover of Eurythmics’ ‘Love Is A Stranger’. Frontlady Paula Gilmer is in full and booming voice, especially when she cracks out that glorious megaphone.
Confident and stirring drums set the whole thing alight. It’s clear that they’ve all the necessary ingredients to progress to the next level.
Having had the first part of their set mired by sound problems, 202s hit their stride with ‘Pressure’, a divine, otherworldly tune which comes on like a slowcore Roxy Music. They go to a darker place with ‘Shoot You Down’, a riotous pyschedelic workout that finds frontman Mike Glennon making good use of a mournful harmonica and (there must be something in the Psychonvigation waters!) megaphone. And when Glennon pulled out that melodica, I can tell you my world shook.
Neosupervital’s Tim O’Donovan goes it alone on stage, which seems only natural. Between scarpering around the room at Usain Bolt-like speed and hopping into a non-existent mosh-pit in serious showman style, he's more than capable of commanding your attention all on his own. ‘Now That I’ve Found It’ suggests a more electronic Phoenix while ‘Do What You Feel’ is funky as hell. The Dubliner finishes with an extended guitar wig-out, just for the night that’s in it. It’s much appreciated by the small, Psychonavigation 9th Birthday Party
