Listen to 'Who's Gonna Stand Up' from Storeytone now.
Still a restless creative spirit in his 69th year, Neil Young is preparing to release his second album of 2014. Don't expect further adventures in lo-fi – following April's A Letter Home, which was recorded in Jack White's refurbished 1947 Voice-o-Graph vinyl recording booth, Young is now enlisting the help of a 92-piece orchestra to make a much bigger sound. That said, he is apparently only using one microphone apparently.
The Canadian artist explains it to Billboard thusly:
"I’d like to make a record with a full-blown orchestra, live—a mono recording with one mic... I want to do something like that where we really record what happened, with one point of view and the musicians moved closer and farther away, the way it was done in the past. To me that’s a challenge and it’s a sound that’s unbelievable, and you can’t get it any other way. So I’m into doing that."
German composer Chris Walden has been working with Young on the album. Entitled Storeytone, it drops November 4.
Here's the orchestral version of 'Who's Gonna Stand Up', a protest song that was quite the rocker when he performed it in Liverpool recently:
