Brendan O'Carroll's creation teams up with Lenny Abrahamson in support of the marriage equality referendum.
The ultimate Irish mammy, Mrs Brown, has released a video in support of the Yes campaign ahead of next month's marriage equality referendum.
The new clip, directed by Lenny Abrahamson (Garage, Frank) and also starring actor Rory Cowan, finds Brendan O'Carroll's alter-ego sharing why she'll be voting yes, and urges people to do the same. She says: “Nothing beats the joy and contentment I feel knowing that my son Rory has just as much opportunity for happiness as everybody else's son. And that's all I ask for him, the opportunity.”
O'Carroll not only stars as Mrs. Brown but he also penned the script.
The video came about when activist Buzz O'Neill and writer Mark O'Halloran approached top Irish filmmakers and asked them to work pro-bono for the promo. Producers Rob Walpole and Rebecca O’Flanagan from Treasure Entertainment came on board to produce the video, while Caroline Downey, Denis Desmond and the MCD team took care of certain unavoidable costs. "All our staff and artists are proud to support a yes vote on May 22nd," Caroline Downey commented. "Whatever little part we could play in making this happen, we were more than happy to do so.”
In case you've just emerged from beneath a sound-proof rock, the referendum takes place on May 22; it would also be remiss if we didn't remind anyone not registered to vote that next week, May 5, is the deadline to sign up to make your voice heard.
