Waterboys members and more to take to the stage this Sunday in aid of sick Irish singer.
Mike Scott and Steve Wickham of '80s folk rock sensations the Waterboys are poised for a Whelan's date this Sunday (April 13) in aid of ailing friend and colleague Hughie Purcell, a well loved Irish-born singer/songwriter now living in Rhode Island.
A first cousin of the Waterboys’ Wickham, he and Purcell first played together in their boyhood band Juggler before setting of busking around Europe together. Returning in 1982 Hughie took up position on Dublin’s streets with guitar in hand at a time when buskers were a considerably rarer sight.
Purcell was known to play with a number of Dublin bands including The Burglars and Toy with Rhythm. Purcell remains a cherished member of the Irish rock community with no shortage of acts playing on the night who he had some personal connection to, including The Dominores, The NoCrows and The Hatricks.
