Dream Life
Rising English act’s debut wasn’t worth the wait
Recorded over a two-year time span that took in glamorous locations such as an art deco apartment above a Berlin brothel and, um, a barn in Norfolk, Dream Like is the debut offering from East Anglican songstress Mary Epworth. Featuring a full and lush production, the record flirts with English folk, ‘60s psychedelia and good old-fashioned country over the course of 11 tracks and songs such as ‘Sweet Boy,’ ‘Six Kisses’ and ‘Long Gone’ are fine advertisements for the singer’s honeyed croon. Sadly though, her admittedly impressive pipes just aren’t enough to make this record a classic. More hooks next time, please...
