'The Edge of Glory' features Clarence Clemons of the E Street Band on sax!
In a now-typical haze of online hysteria, Lady Gaga has released another single from her Born This Way album, previewing the song around the world late last night on radio before putting it on iTunes. 'The Edge of Glory' is the third release to be heard from the album, out here on May 20 and has, thankfully for the star, been the best-received so far after the lukewarm reactions to both 'Born This Way' and 'Judas'. Eschewing any remnant of Madonna comparisons, the song sonically aims straight for the heart of Gaga's chart contemporaries such as Katy Perry and Pink while similarily channeling 80's divas such as Cher and Bonnie Tyler. 'The Edge of Glory' sounds pretty much like an cheesy 80's rock anthem if it was recorded in today's musical climate complete with thumping club beats, but what elevates the song above mere pastiche is an inspired sax-solo from E Street Band member Clarence Clemons in the song's middle-eight, possibly Gaga's most brilliant and unexpected moment in a career so much filled with the unpredictable.
'The Edge of Glory' is the first of three promotional singles to be released from the album (which is released here in Ireland a full three days before anywhere else in the world) and will surely renew interest in the much-hyped release which Gaga has likened to "the greatest album of the decade". The album features 14 tracks on it's standard edition and a further 8 if you're willing to fork out for the special edition and with song titles such as 'Government Hooker', 'Bloody Mary', 'Black Jesus†Amen Fashion' and 'Electric Chapel' is sure to have a controversial element or two.
Check out 'The Edge of Glory' below. (Glorious sax solo starts around the 3 minute mark...).
