They may at times produce a sceptical reaction from the cognoscenti, but awards ceremonies sell albums! That much has been confirmed following last night's 2010 BRIT awards ceremony, at which Lady Gaga stole the show, snaffling three awards.
Music retailer HMV has monitored sales of current chart albums of the key artists featured at last night's ceremony. By mid afternoon it had become clear that Robbie Williams and Florence and the Machine are the early big winners , having seen their album sales more than double overnight. Meanwhile Lady Gaga and Alicia Keys are not far behind.
The top 10 biggest gainers at HMV (stores and online at hmv.com) so far are:
1. Robbie Williams / Reality Killed the Video Star –150% increase
2. Florence + The Machine / Lungs – 140% increase
3. Lady Gaga / The Fame – 90% increase
4. Alicia Keys / The Element of Freedom – 80% increase
5. Cheryl Cole / 3 Words – 77% increase
6. Kasabian / West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum – 75% increase
7. Jay-Z / Blueprint III – 68% increase
8. JLS / JLS – 65% increase
9. Dizzee Rascal / Tongue N Cheek – 60% increase
10. Lily Allen / It's Not Me, It's You – 50% increase
"Nominated BRITs artists can generally expect a significant lift in sales of their recordings following the BRITs TV broadcast and the ensuing media coverage," HMV Head of Music Rudy Osorio, comments. "The biggest gainers based on initial lifts in album sales so far are Robbie, Florence + The Machine and Lady Gaga, who stole the show with her outlandish costume and haul of three awards. 'The Fame' is already one of the biggest sellers of the past twelve months, but will now receive a further massive boost both digitally and via CD sales, during the course of this week. Sales could easily double or treble in the next few days.

"Other big winners so far include Alicia Keys, Cheryl Cole and best group winners Kasabian, as well as Dizzie Rascal and JLS. There are still a great many music fans that don't have their albums, but their respective awards will now persuade them to go out and buy or download a copy.
"As the Critics Choice recipient, Ellie Goulding reached a huge new audience and now has a great platform to launch her debut album."
