Country pop royalty unveil run-of-the-mill release.
For the last couple of years, Nashville’s Lady Antebellum have filled the gap left in mainstream country by the likes of Garth Brooks and the Dixie Chicks, while also offering an alternative-of-sorts to millions of middle-American teens who have grown out of the seemingly omnipresent Hannah Montana. Own The Night is their third record and, as expected, it’s another inoffensive installment of twangy, tuneful hokum that’s so sweet it’d rot the teeth of a Great White shark (yes, all 15 rows). Hilary Scott and Charles Kelley’s vocal trade-offs add a little charm to the generic country sounds (particularly on ‘Friday Night’ and ‘Cold As Stone’) – but ultimately their third record brings nothing new to the table. It’s as safe as a turtle wrapped in bubble wrap.
