Kevin McGahern doesn’t reinvent the wheel with his set based around Irish stereotypes, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t give the packed out Comedy Tent plenty of laughs this evening.
Discussion revolves largely around Irish begrudgery, the economy, the female orgasm and the gay marriage referendum; tried and tested topics. His comments on alcohol bring whoops and claps from a crowd that, at this stage, has probably had one too many. “Although it’s illegal to drink in public in Ireland, it’s a much bigger crime to waste alcohol,” he announces defiantly, later following it with “People are sneaking naggings into weddings again. That’s the sign of a country on the rise.” The man certainly knows his audience.
Anecdotes about his father, his elderly neighbour “Pedro”, and the Cavan death notices are well received, while comparisons between the Kerry accent and the voice of Chewbacca prompt snorts. McGahern’s comedy mightn’t be the most original, but it’s certainly funny; and at this stage on a Saturday evening, that’s all that matters.
