Americana innovator keeps om keeping on
After breaking away from former Talking Heads mainman David Byrne’s label Luaka Bop, American journeyman Jim White opted to fund the recording of his new record Where It Hits You by offering fans packages that ranged from private performances to, erm, lawn-mowing services. And, while I’m sure a few of those lucky recipients can now boast some pretty tidy gardens as a result, the album that was born from his labours is unlikely to set the world on fire. ‘The Way Of Grace,’ ‘My Brother’s Keeper’ and others ramble along pleasantly and feature that country/bluegrass/Americana sound that White himself helped perfect back in the late ‘90s. But unless you’re a devotee, there’s nothing startingly original here to get excited about.
