Following her Arthur’s Day performance in Whelan’s last month, Australian hip-hop beauty Iggy Azalea speaks to Hot Press about her dedicated but drunk Irish fans, frustrating album delays and why she can’t understand people who put her down.
Whelan’s on Arthur’s Day staged the appearance of Iggy Azalea’s second Irish performance, yet surprisingly this one went a little smoother then the last, in terms of fan sobriety. Despite the gallons of ‘black stuff’ being consumed on the annual day of Guinness-worship, Ms Azalea recalls her previous appearance in The Academy being a more raucous affair.
“It was a lot of fun, but I remember a girl who pushed up against the stage and passed out. She missed the whole show. I met her afterwards when she came around and we took a few pictures and hung out for a bit”.
Azalea has a tough-girl image, despite her pretty features and modelling background, yet a softer side to the rapper who loves a good Twitter-feud is evident when it comes to her dedicated fans.
“I felt sooo bad for her that she missed the entire show. I was mortified, because at the time I had no idea when I’d be coming back and the poor thing was unconscious for all of it. She was such a lovely girl”.
Such Twitter feuds usually have to do with Iggy defending her career success as a woman in the industry, or accusations from fellow female stars like Azealia Banks about her privileged (white) upbringing.

“For a lot of people in this world there are things that will never necessarily make sense. You’ll even get shit about it from your friends. Some people are just very straight up and down that they just don’t understand it.”
Another frustration she is dealing with at the minute is the increasing delay on the release of her first album ‘The New Classic’.
“I guess they just wanted to wait for the perfect time, but in my opinion there isn’t really a perfect time. You just have to put it out and get on with it, but they have to wait until it’s a good 30 degrees and there’s a rainbow in the sky and four dogs swiping past or something. Then, that will be the day they want to release my album”.
