Hot Wire
80s Icons’ sound don't work for us no more
This fortnight Scottish tunesmiths Hue & Cry continue their quest to write the perfect pop song with the release of their unashamedly old school sounding new album Hot Wire. Perhaps as expected though, nothing on the LP comes close to their era-defining 1987 smash hit single ‘Labour Of Love’ (altogether now – “Ain’t gonna work for you, no more!”) and the material veers from being moderately pleasant (‘Little Man’) to being as much fun as – well not very much fun at all (‘Carlos Takes The Fall’). Followers of the Kane brothers will doubtless love the super-fly rhythms and jazz and soul mash-ups. But there’s nothing on Hot Wire to warrant repeat plays in the McFee household.
