Initiative to honour the late man's legacy will support students in his beloved Dublin 8
An educational initiative set up to honour former Hot Press-er - and proud Liberties man - George Byrne is inviting applications.
The George Byrne Bursaries were launched last month, and will be administered by the South Inner City Community Development Association. Designed to help students defray the costs of education and training, they are a tribute to the career of the beloved journalist, who became something of a legend during his career, both in this parish and elsewhere, at the Evening Herald and the Irish Independent.
While all applications will be considered, special consideration will be given to candidates who have significant barriers preventing them from realising their full potential through education; for example, economic or family circumstances. The main aim of the programme is to support students from George's native Dublin 8, and will support students studying courses in Food, Music or Journalism.
Each awardee will receive up to €1,000 for a full time bursary or €500 for a part time bursary. Funds were raised at a star-studded tribute gig at Whelan's on June 26. Celebrating George saw Something Happens, Paul Cleary of The Blades, Pugwash, Trouble Pilgrims, The Drays (Stephen Ryan’s new band), and special guests, delivering spectacular performances at the sold-out Wexford St. venue, on an evening compèred by MC Buzz O’Neill and DJ Karl Tsigdinos.
