Florence And The Machine

Celina Murphy, 08 Mar 2012

“I’m trying to frighten people!” Florence told me in September, when I asked about her on-stage persona. After tonight, she can consider her mission accomplished. I genuinely fear for my life as she instructs all 15,000 audience members to jump on the spot at the climax of ‘Dog Days Are Over’. It’s like nothing I’ve seen in the O2 before, and it deserves to have its own commercial (see Robbie Williams’ Nikon-sponsored camera phone moment).

The high drama continues with fan favorites, old (‘Cosmic Love’, ‘You Got The Love’) and new (‘Shake It Out’, ‘No Light, No Light’), all performed to a rapturous reception, all in Florence’s ghostly and highly glamorous goth pop style. At the end of the Gospel-sounding ‘Between Too Lungs’, I notice her doing a little spin in the dark, just for herself. She deserves it.
