FKA Twigs, a rising pop star now directly in the limelight, talks to Ed Power in the new issue of Hot Press, about her confidence issues, her new found popularity, hatred of selfies and growing up mixed-race in Britain's whitest town.
Tahlia Barnett, aka FKA Twigs, was one of the most hotly-tipped acts lined up for last weekend's Electric Picnic. That's what made it all the more crushing when the 26-year-old had to cancel due to a lost voice.
After listening to the whirlwind album LP1, it's easy to explain the hype, but as she explains, crafting that debut release wasn't always smooth sailing.
"There was a lot of struggle making the record," says Barnett. "I have inner belief, though not always at the same level. It varies from 70 to 100 per cent. The 'inner' confidence is always there. Sometimes the 'outer' confidence can be down to 20 per cent. The external wear and tear is occasionally difficult to overcome."
