Erland and the Carnival
Indie outfit channel Dubliners to surprisingly rewarding effect
Pinching songs made famous by The Dubliners (‘Tramps And Hawkers’) and Jackson C. Frank (‘My Name Is Carnival’) might sound like a pointless affair. But this band add healthy lashings of The Doors’s keyboard-led psych-outs. Plus, there’s a trippy, heady vibe to what is an engaging collection of 13 tracks. Best of all, the tunes are mostly up-tempo, there are only a few covers and the LP doesn’t fall into the all too common nu-folk trap of becoming a downbeat exercise in shoe gazing. Don’t be too surprised if this LP inspires indie kids to build their own wickerman in their back gardens!
