A company is claiming the singer-songwriter ripped off a Marvin Gaye classic hit.
They're claiming that Ed plagiarised the classic song 'Let's Get it On', according to a report on TMZ website.
The US company Structured Asset Sales, which owns a third of the copyright of Gaye's song, alleges that Ed Sheeran's track has the same melody, rhythms, harmonies, drums, bassline, backing chorus, tempo, syncopation and looping.
You'd have the wonder how they came up with the insane $100million figure. Perhaps it's linked to the fact that Ed Sheeran's song has been viewed over 2billion times on YouTube?
'Let's Get It On' was co-written by the late Edward Townsend and Marvin Gaye back in 1973. And this is not the first time that Ed Sheehan is been sued over the Marvin Gaye hit, with Townsend's heirs already dragging him through court but unable to get a cent out of him. Or, as TMZ puts it in their exclusive story, Ed Sheeran "called BS" on that lawsuit.
So far Marvin Gaye's family have not launched a lawsuit against Ed Sheehan. If they don't take a case, you'd have to say that this speaks volumes about it all.
Do you think the two songs sound alike?
