Pixar/Disney have enjoyed tremendous sequel success with the likes of Toy Story and Finding Dory but they're promising to park that aside in the hopes of pursuing original content.
President of Pixar, Jim Morris doesn't want to turn the company into a sequel churning factory.
To be fair to Pixar/Disney, their sequels always remain true to the original film with many directors and producers jumping back on board to bring the beloved characters back to life. However, of late, there have been more sequels emanating from the company than original content to feast upon. With many fearing that Pixar is starting to lack initiative and imagination, Morris told Entertainment Weekly that there's been a change of mindset within the company; "Most studios jump on doing a sequel as soon as they have a successful film, but our business model is a filmmaker model, and we don’t make a sequel unless the director of the original film has an idea that they like and are willing to go forward on,” Morris explains, “A sequel in some regards is even harder than the original because you’ve got this defined world which, on the one hand, is a leg up, and on the other hand has expectations that you can’t disappoint on.”
Although there are sequels to The Incredibles, Wreck It Ralph and Cars penciled in for release before 2019, after that Pixar/Disney will be dedicating themselves wholeheartedly to the output of original films; "Our plan had been to make an original every year and a sequel every other year, if the idea came forth to do it,” says Morris. “If we add the next films after the current ones, it actually comes out to exactly that: seven sequels in a spate of 21 originals, from the time we were acquired by Disney in 2006. So it’s penciled out to be the same portfolio, just not in the order we thought they would be."
So animation lovers can rejoice as there will be plenty of new Pixar characters to feast on in the coming years!
