Currently pushing the envelope of Irish television comedy, David McSavage talks frankly to Hot Press (in the new issue, out today), about drugs and creativity, alcoholism as slow suicide, The X-Factor, RTE’s attitude to comedy, and canvassing with his brother - the ex-TD and Minister for Children, Barry Andrews...
On the legalisation of drugs, McSavage comments, "They should be legalised. If you make them illicit and illegal, you’re pushing it underground, and making them more exciting and accessible. They should be taxed.” And on cannabis itself, the comedian says, "I fucking loved grass, I thought it was amazing. Listening to music when you’re stoned is fantastic. Hopefully in a hundred years there’ll be coffee shops selling grass. It would be amazing, wouldn’t it? It would be awesome."
When asked about his hit satirical show The Savage Eye, McSavage says of RTÉ’s attitude to comedy, "Anything religious, they’re freaked out about, they’re touchy. So you can’t say this or make fun of that... there’s all this blasphemy fucking law bullshit.”
