A big fundraising push by David Bowie fans to erect a sculpture in the shape of the 'ZiggyZag' iconic lightning bolt from the 'Aladdin Sane' album cover near his birthplace in London has sadly failed to raise enough cash for the ambitious dream project.
However, it's not all bad news: while fans behind the crowdfunding idea needed to raise a massive £900,000 to fulfill their ambitious tribute, they did still manage to raise the relatively large sum of £50,000. And they are now planning to use that huge amount of cash to pay respect to their hero with an alternative "appropriate piece of public art".
"Of course, £50,000 doesn’t go anywhere near realising the ambitions of the ZiggyZag. It will be no surprise to anyone that this crowdfund isn’t going to hit its target," said the organisers, design team This Ain’t Rock’n’Roll.
"We are still determined to celebrate David Bowie, in Brixton, with a challenging and appropriate piece of public art. We’re just going to have to approach the fundraising in a different way."
They are trying to remain positive and look at bright side. "If someone had told us a year ago that we’d raise £50,000 from nearly 700 wonderful people in just three weeks we wouldn’t have believed it possible," the statement added. "Thank you from the bottom of our Bowie-obsessed hearts for supporting us."
