Forever, In Disguise

There's no disguising this Cork singer's talent

Edwin McFee, 21 Jun 2012

Cork-based musician Daniel Jones’ makes his debut with Forever, In Disguise – and from the off it’s almost impossible not to be enraptured by his wonderfully crooked croon. Part Ian McCulloch from Echo & The Bunnymen, part Thom Yorke (particularly on ‘Pull Me Out Of The Rain’) his delivery drips with drama and emotion. The first half of the record features a raw and fuzzy production that might turn some listeners off, but for this reviewer, the fizzing, crackling guitars on ‘Ain’t This Love A Crime’ and ‘Rip It Up’ are part of teh charm, spicing up proceedings and adding just the right amount to menace to Jones’ threnodies. Forever, In Disguise is a bleak but occasionally brilliant opus.
