David Bowie was posthumously honoured with the Best British Solo Artist and Best British Album for ‘Blackstar’ at last night’s BRIT Awards. While other big winners on the night included Adele who scooped the Global Success Award, Beyonce deservedly took home the gong for Best International Female and Drake was named the Best International Male artist.
Accepting the Best British Album award, David Bowie’s son Duncan said: “He always supported people who are a little bit strange or different. This award is for all the kooks and those who make the kooks.”
Duncan, a filmmaker who has directed several critically acclaimed films, opened up about his father’s tragic death during his speech. “I lost my dad last year and I also became a dad,” he said. “I spent a lot of time after getting over the shock thinking what would I like my son to know about his granddad. It would be he has always been there supporting people who thought they were a little bit weird, strange, different. He’s always been there for them, this award is for all the kooks and all the people that make the kooks.”
Duncan later to Twitter to write: “I did forget one little bit of the speech though.... F**k cancer. F**k it right off the planet.”
Actor Michael C Hall, who starred in Lazarus, accepted the Best British Male Solo Artist on behalf of the late David Bowie and his family. “If David Bowie could be here tonight, he probably wouldn’t be here tonight,” he observed.
1975 won Best British Band last night. Taking to the podium, the band’s frontman Matty Healy said: “This is mental. We’ve been a band since we were 13, for 14 years now. The only thing we tried to do with our album was to get to that place…”
