BBC Radio One presenter Annie Mac reveals the delicate selection processes behind her hugely successful new compilation album, and tells us why her native country has a special place in her heart.
Currently one of the most recognisable voices on UK radio, Dublin DJ Annie Mac has a well-respected and much loved musical ear. Her latest compilation, Annie Mac Presents…2013, has simply annihilated competitors in charts across Europe.
“I feel delighted” she beams, “I guess that’s what it’s all about. You want to be someone who’s believable and about whom people can go, ‘I don’t know what to buy this year, I like going clubbing but I don’t want to by 27 different things.’ People trusting in what I do is all I’ve ever wanted.”
When it comes to choosing who graces the compilation’s final selection Annie works intuitively, selecting the tracks that form part of this year’s musical narrative, but that will stand the test of time. “You want tunes that speak to the overall sound of the year, tunes that are future classics.”
Ireland, Annie concedes, is where she truly belongs. “I love going back to Dublin with my partner, heading into town to proper old pubs, like the Long Hall and the Stag’s Head and just showing him all my favourite parts of the city. It’s my favourite thing to do.”
