The mobile game frenzy turned film has proved its moneys worth over the weekend taking in $39 million.
Louth native Fergal Reilly has worked his arduous way up the film animation ladder to finally co-direct The Angry Birds Movie which overtook Captain America: Civil War in the latest box-office figures.
That is quite a testament in itself. An IADT graduate, over the years Reilly has cultivated his craft, working for the big animation houses such as Walt Disney Animation and Sony Pictures Animation. Finally his big break has come with directorial duties on The Angry Birds Movie. Released here on May 13, The Angry Birds Movie has enjoyed tremendous success globally. Figures indicate that Reilly's project has surpassed the $150 million mark. Co-directed with Clay Kaytis, The Angry Birds Movie triumphed over Captain America, Nice Guys and Bad Neighbours 2 so don't be surprised if Sony announce an Angry Birds 2. The film has also garnered favourable reviews from critics for its family friendliness and its championing of mobile game - movie transition.
The Angry Birds Movie is set on Bird Island, an island which is inhabited by flightless birds. One bird in particular, Red, has a fiery temper which makes him an outcast. However, when the island is invaded by mysterious green pigs, Red's temper is just what Bird Island needs.
You can see what all the hype is about for yourself as The Angry Birds Movie is in cinemas now.
