Snow Patrol & Florence + The Machine

Phoenix Park, Dublin

Craig Fitzpatrick, 28 Aug 2012

‘Set Fire To The Third Bar’ is typically gorgeous, with Maria Doyle Kennedy sharing vocal duties, while the intro guitar line to ‘Chasing Cars’ causes a skinhead in front to pump his fist and shout, ‘Yes!’. It’s a more eclectic crowd than might have been anticipated.

The Fallen Empires material, bar the excellent ‘Called Out In The Dark’, doesn’t have the same traction. The techno of the title-track feels oddly out of place, and ‘This Isn’t Everything You Are’ overloads on sentiment.

The encore is suitably emotional, however, with Lightbody bringing his dad onstage, a nod to family which is a feature of the current show. They end with ‘Lifening’, a one-note, contented smile. “This is all I ever wanted from life” he sings. Some guys have all the luck!.
